AB Women's Soccer Open 2009 in a Big Way

(Beckley, WV)--- The A-B College Women's Soccer Team opened their 2nd season in a huge way with an 8-0 win over host Mountain State on Saturday. The Lady Battlers got two goals a piece from Freshmen Gwen Brand, Jenny Perry and Kasie Shoemaker and a goal each from Kaitlyn Mahoney and Brittany Messer.

Brand would open the scoring in the 6th minute as she would finish a Taylor Bryant cross in the box. A-B would struggle over the next 20 minutes to find a rythm before catching a grove to finish the half.

Kasie Shoemaker would make it 2-0 in the 33rd minute on a throug ball by Brooke Logston. Shoemaker would push the lead to 3-0 in the 39th minute on a great pass by J. Perry. Perry would wrapped up the 1st half scoring with her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute.

Alderson-Broaddus College would out shoot Mountain State 17-2 in the opening frame, and held a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The 2nd half would be much like the 1st, as the Lady Battler's would add four more goals. Mahoney would break throught middle of the field and finish in the right side of the next in the 50th to make it 5-0.

Gwen Brand would pick up her 2nd goal with a beautiful left footed finish from 22 yards out that would find the upper left corner of the goal in the 54th minute.

Perry would add her second as she would slot a 14 yard shot just inside the right post, 58 minutes in to make it 7-0.

Freshmen Brittany Messer finished the scoring in the 64th minute, with a blast from around the penalty spot.

The eight goals is a record for the young program, topping the previous high mark of five set twice last year.

The Lady Battlers will return to action this weekend as they open WVIAC play with preseason #2 Concord University. Kick off on Friday is 4pm.
