Johnson and Shoemaker Named To All Atlantic Region Team

WJU's Houston Named Daktronics Atlantic Region Soccer Player of the Year; Four WVIAC Standouts Earn First Team All-Region Honors

(SLIPPERY ROCK, PA)---Wheeling Jesuit University forward Kara Houston was named Tuesday as the Daktronics, Inc. Atlantic Region women’s soccer “Player of the Year.”

Houston also headlined a list of 13 student-athletes named to first-team all-region honors in voting powered by ATHLETICSITE.COM and conducted among sports information directors at NCAA Division II institutions located in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

A junior from Washington, Pa., Houston was the leading goal scorer in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this fall with 24 and added four assists to finish the season with 52 points. A first-team All-WVIAC selection, she led her team to an 11-10 overall record.

Other WVIAC first team honorees are Concord's Gemma Nortcliffe, Davis & Elkins' Megan Beal, and Alderson-Broaddus' Megan Johnson.

WVIAC Tournament champion West Virginia Wesleyan had six second team all-region selections in Jill Morrison, Katie Roberts, Hannah Macormic, Meghan Zayas, Alanna Torrey, and Caroline Lalley. Davis & Elkins teammates and sisters Cole and Megan Dant were also second team picks. Kasie Shoemaker (A-B) and Fallon Nicholas (Charleston) round out the WVIAC honorees on the second squad.

Five Lady Battlers Named to All WVIAC Teams

Zayas, Shoemaker, McGinnis Take Top '09 WVIAC Women's Soccer Awards

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---West Virginia Wesleyan's Meghan Zayas and Alderson-Broaddus's Kasie Shoemaker have been awarded top 2009 WVIAC women's soccer player honors as voted upon by league head coaches. Zayas helped lead Wesleyan to the WVIAC Tournament championsip and was named Player of the Year, while Shoemaker played a key role in Alderson-Broaddus' rapid climb in the league standings to grab Freshman of the Year accolades. A-B's Pat McGinnis was honored by his peers as the WVIAC Coach of the Year.

Zayas, a Ponchatoula, LA junior, stands second on the Wesleyan squad with 16 points on five goals and a team-high six assists. The midfielder also contributed mightily to a Bobcat defense that has only allowed 15 goals in 20 contests en route to a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Shoemaker's 33 points led A-B and ranks third in the WVIAC. The Hyndman, PA native's 15 goals also rank third in the league as the youthful Battlers spent time in the NCAA Division II regional rankings.

McGinnis' Alderson-Broaddus squad quadrupled their victory total from 3 to 12 in only the program's second season of play. The Battlers posted a 6-3-1 league record and qualified for the WVIAC Tournament despite a roster that included no juniors or seniors. The Columbus, Ohio native owns a 15-17-1 record during his tenure at A-B.

WVIAC regular season champion Davis & Elkins placed a league-high six players on the first team all-conference squad. The Senators were represented by goalkeeper Jacqueline Krum, forwards Cole Dant and Kim Brown, midfielders Megan Beal and Alexa McCartney, and defender Allison Dant.

Wheeling Jesuit had three selections in forward Kara Houston, midfielder Hannah Walker, and defender Stephanie Marazza. Zayas and defender Alanna Torrey are the honorees for tournament champion Wesleyan.

Forward Gemma Nortcliffe and midfielder Katie Cuviello are from Concord. Shoemaker and defender Megan Johnson are the Alderson-Broaddus selections. Charleston defender Fallon Nicholas rounds out the 2009 All-WVIAC first team.

Cole Dant, Cuviello, Nortcliffe, Zayas, and Torrey are repeat selections from the 2008 All-WVIAC first squad. Dant and Torrey are three-time first team honorees. Both were selected to the 2007 first team as freshmen.
