Johnson and Shoemaker Named to NSCAA All Region Team

(KANSAS CITY, KS)---Davis & Elkins senior midfielder Megan Beal has been selected as a second team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She is joined on the All-Atlantic Region first squad by teammates Allison Dant and Cole Dant.

Beal, a Pilesgrove, NJ native, helped D&E to a 10-0-0 WVIAC regular season mark and a 14-5-0 overall record by recording ten goals and four assists. The first team All-WVIAC honoree also earned Daktronics first team all-region honors as selected by Atlantic Region sports information directors.

Alderson-Broaddus freshmen Megan Johnson and Kasie Shoemaker were named to the second team NSCAA All-Atlantic Region squad. The pair helped the Battlers improve to 12-4-1 in only the program's second season.

D&E keeper Jacqueline Krum, Pitt Johnstown defender Emily Babik, Wheeling Jesuit forward Kara Houston, and Davis & Elkins forward Kim Brown represented the WVIAC on the third team.

WJU's Houston Named Daktronics Atlantic Region Soccer Player of the Year; Four WVIAC Standouts Earn First Team All-Region Honors

(SLIPPERY ROCK, PA)---Wheeling Jesuit University forward Kara Houston was named Tuesday as the Daktronics, Inc. Atlantic Region women’s soccer “Player of the Year.”

Houston also headlined a list of 13 student-athletes named to first-team all-region honors in voting powered by ATHLETICSITE.COM and conducted among sports information directors at NCAA Division II institutions located in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

A junior from Washington, Pa., Houston was the leading goal scorer in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this fall with 24 and added four assists to finish the season with 52 points. A first-team All-WVIAC selection, she led her team to an 11-10 overall record.

Other WVIAC first team honorees are Concord's Gemma Nortcliffe, Davis & Elkins' Megan Beal, and Alderson-Broaddus' Megan Johnson.

WVIAC Tournament champion West Virginia Wesleyan had six second team all-region selections in Jill Morrison, Katie Roberts, Hannah Macormic, Meghan Zayas, Alanna Torrey, and Caroline Lalley. Davis & Elkins teammates and sisters Cole and Megan Dant were also second team picks. Kasie Shoemaker (A-B) and Fallon Nicholas (Charleston) round out the WVIAC honorees on the second squad.

Five Lady Battlers Named to All WVIAC Teams

Zayas, Shoemaker, McGinnis Take Top '09 WVIAC Women's Soccer Awards

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---West Virginia Wesleyan's Meghan Zayas and Alderson-Broaddus's Kasie Shoemaker have been awarded top 2009 WVIAC women's soccer player honors as voted upon by league head coaches. Zayas helped lead Wesleyan to the WVIAC Tournament championsip and was named Player of the Year, while Shoemaker played a key role in Alderson-Broaddus' rapid climb in the league standings to grab Freshman of the Year accolades. A-B's Pat McGinnis was honored by his peers as the WVIAC Coach of the Year.

Zayas, a Ponchatoula, LA junior, stands second on the Wesleyan squad with 16 points on five goals and a team-high six assists. The midfielder also contributed mightily to a Bobcat defense that has only allowed 15 goals in 20 contests en route to a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Shoemaker's 33 points led A-B and ranks third in the WVIAC. The Hyndman, PA native's 15 goals also rank third in the league as the youthful Battlers spent time in the NCAA Division II regional rankings.

McGinnis' Alderson-Broaddus squad quadrupled their victory total from 3 to 12 in only the program's second season of play. The Battlers posted a 6-3-1 league record and qualified for the WVIAC Tournament despite a roster that included no juniors or seniors. The Columbus, Ohio native owns a 15-17-1 record during his tenure at A-B.

WVIAC regular season champion Davis & Elkins placed a league-high six players on the first team all-conference squad. The Senators were represented by goalkeeper Jacqueline Krum, forwards Cole Dant and Kim Brown, midfielders Megan Beal and Alexa McCartney, and defender Allison Dant.

Wheeling Jesuit had three selections in forward Kara Houston, midfielder Hannah Walker, and defender Stephanie Marazza. Zayas and defender Alanna Torrey are the honorees for tournament champion Wesleyan.

Forward Gemma Nortcliffe and midfielder Katie Cuviello are from Concord. Shoemaker and defender Megan Johnson are the Alderson-Broaddus selections. Charleston defender Fallon Nicholas rounds out the 2009 All-WVIAC first team.

Cole Dant, Cuviello, Nortcliffe, Zayas, and Torrey are repeat selections from the 2008 All-WVIAC first squad. Dant and Torrey are three-time first team honorees. Both were selected to the 2007 first team as freshmen.

Women's Soccer Gets Past UC 2-1

(Philippi, WV) --- The Lady Battlers of Alderson-Broaddus continued in the right direction in their second ever season as they knocked off the University of Charleston 2-1 in recent home action. This was the first conference victory for A-B in conference play and they improved to 3-2-1 overall.

In the 20th minute Brooke Hunsaker launched a shot from 22 yards out that hit the top shelf left corner to give A-B the early 1-0 lead. Gwen Brand and Taylor Bryant were credited with the assists. The lead held up until the 40th minute when Holli Dalton of UC netted a pass from Sharon Lapinsky to even things up at 1-1 going into the half. This was the only first half goal given up by the Lady Battlers on the season.

It didn’t take A-B long in the second half to retake the lead as Taylor Bryant scored her first goal of the season to give the lead back, just four minutes and 10 seconds in. The Lady Battlers’ defense held strong for the duration of the match, as they wouldn’t allow a single shot on goal in the 2^nd Half.

Kate Laird would pick up the victory in between the pipes for A-B. Alderson-Broaddus peppered UC goalie Whitney Sharp, outshooting the Lady Golden Eagles 17-5. The Lady Battlers also held the advantage on shots on goal 6-1.

The next game for A-B will come in a road trip to Rio Grande on September 30. A-B defeated Rio Grande 2-1 in exhibition play earlier in the season. Read more on this article...

A-B Earns National Statistical Ranking

The women’s soccer program at A-B has cracked the top 100 in several prominent categories in the nation in only their second full season as a program.

Their highest team ranking comes in shutout percentages as they are currently ranked a respective 26. In save percentage the Lady Battlers are sitting at 30 in the nation and also are ranked 46 in goals against and finally are ranked 53 in scoring offense.

Kate Laird has had an impressive freshman campaign as goalkeeper and has garnished a WVIAC player of the week award. Also she is ranked 29 in the nation in save percentage and 79 in goals against average. Fellow freshman Kasie Shoemaker is ranked 59 in goals per game and 72 in points per game.

Currently the Lady Battlers are 3-2-1 in the early goings of their season and continue to take steps forward in building a WVIAC top competitor. Read more on this article...

Lady Battlers Fall to Davis & Elkins 1-0

(Elkins, WV) --- The A-B Women's Soccer team suffered another tough loss yesterday afternoon, a 1-0 setback to the host Lady Senators of Davis and Elkins College. With the loss the Lady Battlers fall to 1-2-1 Overall and 0-2-1 in WVIAC play.

D&E Midfielder Megan Beal broke a scoreless tie with a perfectly placed outside shot in the 80th minute. Beal would take a pass on the left side from Midfield Luci Legaspi, turn and place a left footed shot into the upper right corner for the game winner.

Excluding the goal, the game was a tightly contested battle between the two teams. D&E held a 12-7 advantage on shots and place three shots on goal compared to the two from A-B.

The Lady Battlers got their best chance in the final minutes of the opening half as they got back to back corner kicks, but they were unable to put a solid shot on frame.

Then with time running down Midfielder Gwen Brand (Fr., Kingwood, WV) just narrowly missed with her header off a Lizzy Turner (Fr., Fairmont, WV) cross from the left corner.

Alderson - Broaddus has a short layoff as they play host to non conference foe WVU - Tech on Saturday. This will be a doubleheader with both the Men's and Women's teams taking on WVU-T. AB Women's Soccer Drops a Heartbreaker to Concord, 3-2

(Philippi, WV) --- The A-B College Women's Soccer Team had a huge upset slip through their fingers in the final minutes on Friday evening as they fell to perennial WVIAC power Concord (3-1, 1-0) 3-2 in overtime.

The Lady Battlers (1-1, 0-1) would strike first as Gwen Brand (Fr., Kingwood, WV) would chip the CU Goalie from 30 yards out to gain the 1-0 lead just 7 minutes in. Both teams would have a couple of good scoring chances in the opening half, but A-B would take the 1-0 lead into the break.

The score would stay that way until the 57th minute, as 1st Team All WVIAC Forward Gemma Nortcliffe would break free from the A-B back four and beat GK Kate Laird (Fr., Morgantown, WV) to knot the game at 1-1.

Forward Kasie Shoemaker would give the Battlers the lead in the 78th minute as she would race down the right wing and then float a perfect ball just inside the left post for her third goal of the season, giving AB a 2-1 lead.

Then with 1:10 left to go, Forward Lindsey DeVaughn would come off the bench for CU to send the game into overtime with a chip over the GK Laird into the left side netting.

Concord would end any hopes of an upset as Nortcliffe would out muscle Defender Megan Johnson (Fr., Charleston, WV) and bury the game winner just under 7 minutes into the first overtime.

Both teams would finish with 15 shots, while CU would hold a 11-9 advantage on shots on goal. Each team would have six corner kicks a piece.

Laird would come up big with eight saves, while her counter part Kacey HIldebrand would stop seven battler scoring opportunities.

The Lady Battlers will look to rebound as they travel to Buckhannon, WV this Thursday to take on Back to Back WVIAC Champions WV Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 7pm. Read more on this article...

AB Men's Soccer Falls to UC, 4-1

(Philippi, WV) -- The A-B College Men's Soccer team dropped a WVIAC battle to the visiting Golden Eagles of Charleston by a score of 4-1 this afternoon.

The Battlers would start off on the right foot as Sophomore Juan Arobleda would notch his 1st career goal just 1 minute and 43 seconds into the contest. Heiko Voss would beat the keeper around the left side of the goal and then tap it back across for the easy tap in goal.

However, just two minutes later UC would answer right back as Rob Vincent would drill a shot from the right side of the box just passed the outstretch arms of GK Neil Wright-Elliot and squeeze it inside the left post.

Charleston's Darko Karamatic would put the Golden Eagles in the lead for good in the 25th minute as he would beat Wright-Elliot with a blast in the upper right corner after getting around the Battlers' central defenders.

Vincent would make it 3-1 on his second goal in the 44th minute as he would slot the perfectly played square pass Karamatic into the left side from 8 yards out.

Drew DeAngelo would cap the scoring in the 89th minute as a UC shot would be saved off the line by right back Jacob Hill and land right to DeAngelo who wasted no time burying it into the far right side netting.

For the game Charleston out shot the host Battlers 20-8. The teams were even with five corner kicks a piece.

A-B College returns to action this Sunday and Monday as they travel to Johnstown, PA. Kick off is at 2pm Sunday as they take on Columbia Union. Then on Monday they will take on Holy Family at Noon. AB Women's Soccer Open 2009 in a Big Way

(Beckley, WV)--- The A-B College Women's Soccer Team opened their 2nd season in a huge way with an 8-0 win over host Mountain State on Saturday. The Lady Battlers got two goals a piece from Freshmen Gwen Brand, Jenny Perry and Kasie Shoemaker and a goal each from Kaitlyn Mahoney and Brittany Messer.

Brand would open the scoring in the 6th minute as she would finish a Taylor Bryant cross in the box. A-B would struggle over the next 20 minutes to find a rythm before catching a grove to finish the half.

Kasie Shoemaker would make it 2-0 in the 33rd minute on a throug ball by Brooke Logston. Shoemaker would push the lead to 3-0 in the 39th minute on a great pass by J. Perry. Perry would wrapped up the 1st half scoring with her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute.

Alderson-Broaddus College would out shoot Mountain State 17-2 in the opening frame, and held a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The 2nd half would be much like the 1st, as the Lady Battler's would add four more goals. Mahoney would break throught middle of the field and finish in the right side of the next in the 50th to make it 5-0.

Gwen Brand would pick up her 2nd goal with a beautiful left footed finish from 22 yards out that would find the upper left corner of the goal in the 54th minute.

Perry would add her second as she would slot a 14 yard shot just inside the right post, 58 minutes in to make it 7-0.

Freshmen Brittany Messer finished the scoring in the 64th minute, with a blast from around the penalty spot.

The eight goals is a record for the young program, topping the previous high mark of five set twice last year.

The Lady Battlers will return to action this weekend as they open WVIAC play with preseason #2 Concord University. Kick off on Friday is 4pm. Read more on this article...

AB Women Picked to Finish 8th

(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---Two-time defending champion West Virginia Wesleyan is the overwhelming choice to capture the 2009 WVIAC women's soccer title. The Lady 'Cats earned seven of the nine first place votes cast by league coaches in the annual pre-season poll.

Concord, which finished second in the WVIAC regular season and tournament in 2008, captured a pair of first place votes and ended up second in the poll. Wheeling Jesuit, Davis & Elkins, and Charleston round out the top half of the poll. Seton Hill and Shepherd hold down the sixth and seventh spots. Alderson-Broaddus and Pitt Johnstown tied for eighth, while Ohio Valley completes the poll in tenth. Salem International is not eligible for this season's WVIAC title.

West Virginia Wesleyan (15-3-1, 10-0) returns nine starters from a squad that climbed as high as fifth nationally last season. Head coach Glenn Francis' club will be strong in goal with sophomore Caroline Lally, who posted a 0.65 goals against average last season. WVWC also welcomes back 2007 starter Lauren Hessian. Midfielders Meghan Zayas and Hannah Macmoric were 2008 first team all-conference picks. Alanna Torrey, an All-WVIAC selection last season, heads up a group of defenders with 137 games of composite starting experience.

Concord (12-8-1, 9-1) also welcomes back nine starters from a club that pushed Wesleyan into a scoreless shootout during the 2008 WVIAC Tournament title game. Junior forward Gemma Nortcliffe was second in the WVIAC with 21 goals last season. First team all-league performers Katie Cuviello and Terri Donnelly are also back on hand for Carol Bonnes' Lady Lions.

Wheeling Jesuit (6-12, 5-4) fell out of contenion for the conference title last season, but the tradition-rich Cardinals are forecast to return near the top of the table in 2009. WJU welcomes back their leading scorers from last season in Kara Houston (12 g, 3a) and all-conference midfielder Jessica Park (6g, 5a).

Davis & Elkins (11-8, 7-3) will rely on high-scoring junior Cole Dant, who has netted 55 goals in two seasons as a Senator. D&E also returns second team All-WVIAC goalkeeper Jackie Krum and forward Bonnie Little. Little contributed eight goals and six assists of her to the WVIAC's highest scoring attack in 2008.

Charleston (10-10, 8-2) must replace all-region defender Bailey Bryant, but the Golden Eagles return much of a squad that was in thick of the WVIAC championship hunt during the 2008 regular season. Senior keeper Whitney Sharp ranked among the conference leaders in goals against average.

Seton Hill (9-10-1, 5-5) brings back 10 of 11 starters. Forward Desiree Gonzalez and midfielder Lauren Sauter are among a group of talented sophomores for a young Griffin squad.

Shepherd (8-10, 4-6) has all eleven starters back on hand. Forward Brianna Hines registered 14 goals in 2008 during her rookie campaign for the Rams.

Alderson-Broaddus (3-13, 2-8) will still a field a young squad during the program's second season with no Battler older than 19 years of age. Sophomore forward Sarah Talbott was an honorable mention All-WVIAC pick last season.

Pitt Johnstown (4-13, 3-6) is another program with little turnover in their starting lineup as the Lady Cats have 10 starters back. Seniors Alicia Zach (7 g, 6 a) and Kristin Kelly (5 g, 5a) led the UPJ attack in 2008.

Ohio Valley (1-18, 1-9) looks to move up in the league standings with seven starters back. Salem International (0-11, 0-10) hopes to snap a 25-game overall losing skid. The Tigers have dropped their last 32 contests versus NCAA Division II foes.

The WVIAC women's soccer regular season gets underway Thursday, August 27 when Ohio Valley welcomes Mountain State and Seton Hill hosts Clarion. The top six squads in the final regular standings qualify for the WVIAC Tournament. The November 2-7 event is contested on the home pitches of the highest seeds.

ABWSoc Recruit Does Well at Maryland State T&F Championships

Lady Battler recruit Amber Kling from Nothern Garrett H.S. did well over the weekend at the 2009 Maryland State H.S. Track and Field Championships.
